Northwest – Salta

HOUSE OF JASMINES ★★★★★

The 120-year-old estancia has a sprawling ranch house and 300 verdant acres alongside the Arenales River. Seven rustic-chic guestrooms are available with beamed ceilings, four-poster beds, wrought-iron chandeliers, and carefully chosen Argentine antiques. There are no TVs in the rooms but wireless Internet access is available throughout the house. Local, seasonal meals are served nightly. A pond-like pool, a small spa with a range of treatments on offer, and a paddock of fine horses complete the property. Guests can explore Argentina’s glorious countryside hiking or horseback riding with views of the surrounding Andes Mountain range. The proximity to Salta allows spending some time exploring the 16th-century Spanish city which has the best-preserved colonial architecture in the country.

PATIOS DE CAFAYATE WINE RESORT ★★★★★

Viñas de Cafayate Wine Resort, hidden by vines and surrounded by mountains, was built on a vineyard plantation at the foot of the impressive San Isidro Mountain in Cafayate, south of Salta. Rustic in style but with all the modern amenities, the hotel is housed in a Spanish colonial style building with a huge courtyard and a beautiful fountain. The surrounding vineyards produce Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and the famous Torrontes wine that is typical of Northwest Argentina. The Wine Resort offers twelve rooms with traditional décor including tapestries, terra-cotta tiles and cane ceilings. All overlook the vineyards and the mountains.

The charming Hotel Manantial del Silencio, located in Jujuy, was built in a colonial style set beneath dramatic red-rock cliffs. The interiors have been carefully decorated with antique tapestries, sofas buried under cushions, local ceramics, woven blankets and upholstery from the province of Catamarca creating a warm and peaceful atmosphere. El Manantial offers 19 guestrooms, all with private bath and shower facilities, tiled floors and bamboo ceilings. Facilities include an outdoor swimming pool set in the garden, a cosy library with a fireplace and a gourmet Andean Restaurant that serves local specialities including Llama meat, quinoa and other regional dishes.

ESTANCIA LAS CARRERAS

Surrounded by mountains in the picturesque Tafi del Valle, Estancia Las Carreras was originally built by the Jesuits in approximately 1718. The estancia offers 10 guestrooms that are accessed through a central colonial style patio. Each room is decorated with local fabrics and throws weaved by artisans in the region that reflect the different stages in the history of the valley: from the first settlers on to the Incas and the colonial population. At Las Carreras guests will find regional cuisine with a contemporary touch, exciting outdoor guided adventures, and visits to their famous cheese factory. Tafi cheese has been produced lovingly for over 300 years.
